Policy makers, analysts, and proponents of housing assistance for low-income families need reliable information on the size, composition, and quality of the assisted housing stock and the characteristics of its occupants. To produce this information, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) undertook special research to identify assisted households who are also surveyed in the biennial American Housing Survey (AHS). This paper describes these research efforts and presents the results.

The reported data represent assisted households and units in alSO states and the District of Columbia, but do not represent units in Puerto Rico, Guam, or the Virgin Islands. These data are the first statistically valid description of assisted households available since 1979 and the first statistically valid description of assisted units ever published. HUD plans to replicate this analysis every two years with each new AHS.
