Permits for construction of new housing units were up a statistically insignificant 1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2001, at a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of 1,578,000 units, but were unchanged from the fourth quarter of 2000. One-unit permits, at 1,200,000 units, were unchanged from the level of the previous quarter and unchanged from a year earlier. Multifamily permits (5 or more units in structure), at 309,000 units, were a statistically insignificant 5 percent above the third quarter of 2001 but a statistically insignificant 1 percent below the fourth quarter of 2000.

On an annual basis, 1,612,100 housing permits were issued in 2001, 1 percent more than in 2000. Of these, 1,222,200 were one-unit permits, an increase of 2 percent over 2000. Multifamily permits, at 321,100, were 2 percent lower than in 2000.

Construction starts of new housing units in the fourth quarter of 2001 totaled 1,571,000 units at a seasonally adjusted annual rate, a statistically insignificant 2 percent below the third quarter of 2001 but a statistically insignificant 2 percent above the fourth quarter of 2000. Single-family starts, at 1,255,000 units, were a statistically insignificant 2 percent lower than the previous quarter but a statistically insignificant 3 percent above the year before. Multifamily starts totaled 288,000 units, unchanged from the previous quarter but a statistically insignificant 3 percent above the same quarter in 2000.

On an annual basis, 1,603,100 housing units were started in 2001, 2 percent above the number started in 2000. Of these, 1,274,700 were single-family units, an increase of 4 percent over the previous year. Multifamily starts totaled 292,300 units, 2 percent less than in 2000.

Housing units under construction at the end of the fourth quarter of 2001 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,006,000 units, a statistically insignificant 1 percent below the previous quarter but a statistically insignificant 4 percent above the fourth quarter of 2000. Single-family units stood at 679,000, a statistically insignificant 2 percent below the previous quarter but a statistically insignificant 4 percent above the fourth quarter of 2000. Multifamily units were at 295,000 units, unchanged from the previous quarter but up a statistically insignificant 4 percent from the fourth quarter of 2000.

On an annual basis, at the end of 2001 there were 940,800 units under construction, an increase of 1 percent over 2000. There were 627,800 single-family units under construction, 1 percent more than at the end of the previous year. Multifamily units stood at 281,600, unchanged from the year before.

Housing units completed in the fourth quarter of 2001, at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,602,000 units, were up a statistically insignificant 1 percent from the previous quarter and up 5 percent from the same quarter of 2000. Single-family completions, at 1,300,000 units, were up a statistically insignificant 3 percent from the previous quarter and up 7 percent from the rate of a year earlier. Multifamily completions, at 269,000 units, were a statistically insignificant 5 percent below the previous quarter and a statistically insignificant 5 percent below the same quarter of 2000.

Builders completed 1,566,700 housing units in 2001, an amount unchanged from the previous year. Of these, 1,252,600 were single-family units, an increase of 1 percent from 2000. Multifamily completions totaled 280,400, 8 percent below the previous year.

Manufactured (Mobile) Home Shipments iconManufactured (Mobile) Home Shipments*

Shipments of new manufactured (mobile) homes were at a seasonally adjusted rate of 205,000 units in the fourth quarter of 2001, which is 3 percent above the previous quarter and 5 percent above the rate of a year earlier.

In all of 2001, 193,300 units were shipped, a decline of 23 percent from 2000.
