FY10 Sustainable Communities Research Grant Program Grantees

HUD has announced six awards under the 2010 Sustainable Communities Research Grant program (SCRGP). Each of the award recipients listed below will carry out studies that contribute to the growing body of knowledge in sustainability research:

  • International City/County Management Association (Washington, DC), “Local Government Sustainable Communities Research Program: Advancing Social Equity Goals to Achieve Sustainability,” $284,666.
  • The National Housing Trust (Washington, DC), “How Does and How Can the Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) Program Most Effectively be Used to Promote the Preservation of Affordable Rental Housing near Transit?” $348,696.
  • The University of Miami (Miami, FL), “Health Impacts of the Built-Environment among Miami Medicare/Medicaid Beneficiaries,” $500,000.
  • The Urban Institute (Washington, DC), “How Do HUD-Assisted Households Balance Housing, Neighborhood Conditions, and Transportation?” $348,696.
  • Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Blacksburg, VA), “Impact of Market Behavior on the Adoption and Diffusion of Innovative Green Building Technologies in Residential Firms,” $363,475.

The grantees will use the $2.5 million in SCRGP funding to build on existing evidence-based scholarship in sustainability, evaluate new and existing tools and strategies that preserve affordable housing; improve accessibility via effective transit systems; minimize regulatory barriers to sustainable development and strengthen land use planning and urban design; further economic advances to job creation and promotion of diverse communities; and adopt policies that help reduce carbon emissions and conserve energy. Results from the research conducted under these grants will fill key data and information gaps and inform policies that promote sustainable development and green, energy-efficient building practices.
