New on The Edge

From the Assistant Secretary:
Moving to Opportunity for Fair Housing Demonstration Program: Final Impacts Evaluation

The Moving to Opportunity (MTO) demonstration program, initiated nearly 20 years ago to discover how neighborhoods affect families, has been completed and the final evaluation released. Some of the findings were unexpected and have caused a stir. Assistant Secretary Bostic discusses the unanticipated findings and their implications for future HUD research and program efforts.

In Practice:
Healthy Living at Via Verde

Via Verde (The Green Way), a new development of affordable, sustainable, mixed-income housing underway on formerly contaminated land in the South Bronx, is a pilot project for New York City’s Active Design Guidelines, intended to reduce obesity through exercise while encouraging sustainable practice. The 221-unit complex includes numerous innovative amenities including a farmer’s market, a health education and wellness center, and rooftop gardens.

FEMA’s Alternative Housing Pilot Program
Natural disasters affect all members of the community; in 2006 FEMA established the Alternative Housing Pilot Program (AHPP) to identify and evaluate better ways to house disaster survivors. Under an interagency agreement with FEMA, HUD is providing engineering assistance and other support to evaluate the success of the AHPP units and their impact on the recovery of individual victims of the 2005 hurricane season.
