Quarterly Housing Market and Research Update - Header Image

You are invited to attend a briefing hosted by Assistant Secretary Dr. Raphael W. Bostic.

The Quarterly Housing Market and Research Update includes the following discussions:

  • Changes in the State of the Nation’s Housing Markets: 2nd Quarter 2011 Update
  • Know Your Indicators: Calculation of Consumer Price Index
  • Memphis Murders Revisited: Do Housing Voucher Households Cause Crime?
  • Panel Discussion of the Memphis Murder Revisited Article

The panel discussion, based on the report entitled “Memphis Murder Revisited: Do Housing Vouchers Cause Crime?,” is available here. The report explains, “Although the size of the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program increased to over 2.2 million units by 2008, communities sometimes oppose vouchers because of concerns that voucher recipients will both reduce property values and heighten crime.” However, despite these concerns, little research exists on the link between voucher holders and crime. The report attempts to fill this gap by examining neighborhood crime and voucher utilization data from 10 large cities over multiple years.

We hope you can join us for this exciting discussion that will address the question, “Do Housing Vouchers Cause Crime?” After a brief presentation on the article, panelists will share their perspective and expertise on the issue. There will also be time to field questions from the audience.

Panelists include:

David E. Chase, Moderator & Director, Program Monitoring & Research Division, HUD
Ingrid Gould Ellen, Professor of Public Policy and Urban Planning, NYU
Ronald Wilson, Social Science Analyst, Program Monitoring & Research Division, HUD
Marina Myhre, Social Science Analyst, Program Evaluation Division, HUD
