Milwaukee, Wisconsin: Permanent Supportive Housing at Veterans Manor

HUD USER publishes a series of Case Study examples based on federal, state, and local strategies that increase affordable housing opportunities, integrate sustainable features and practices, and increase access to public transportation. The projects featured in these reports have demonstrated innovation through a multitude of partnerships and initiatives.

The most recent Case Study is the Thomas S. Wynn, Sr. Memorial Veterans Manor in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The 52-unit, mixed-use development provides permanent supportive housing to formerly homeless veterans in the city’s Near West Side neighborhood. Supportive services include job and substance abuse counseling and educational, technical, and health and wellness training. A commercial kitchen within the building provides between 3,000 and 5,000 daily meals for local school children and employs many Veterans Manor residents. The project has received several awards, including the Milwaukee Award for Neighborhood Development Innovation, and stands as a testament to the importance of partnerships and cross-sector collaboration in meeting HUD’s goal of ending veteran homelessness by 2015.

Visit HUD USER’s Case Studies Resource page to learn how Veterans Manor is improving the lives of veterans in Milwaukee, and to view other promising examples of how communities across the nation are raising the bar on affordable, sustainable development.
