Incorporating Sustainable Land and Water Strategies Into a Master Plan

In 2002, the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians located in Michigan and Indiana began development of a master plan. Because of the cultural importance of water stewardship to the tribe, this plan includes both land use and water quality protection strategies. A new case study from HUD’s Sustainable Construction in Indian Country (SCinIC) initiative describes some of the land and water management innovations that the Pokagon Band has incorporated into new communities.

These innovations include bioswales, permeable path and roadway materials, use of rain gardens and plants native to the area, and clustered housing plans. Use of these best management practices has improved water quality, decreased lawn maintenance, eliminated the need for chemical and fertilizer, and maintained the area’s rural feel.

The Band has continued to add energy-efficient and sustainable technologies into its development toolkit, including the construction of a LEED Gold-certified community center.

SCinIC, under HUD’s Office of Policy Development and Research, promotes the enhanced use of sustainable materials and technologies in Native American housing communities through technical assistance, training, and promotional materials.
