Message from PD&R Leadership:
A Visit to Cleveland, Ohio
In the leadership message, director of PD&R's International and Philanthropic Affairs Division Cynthia Campbell recounts a recent visit to Cleveland, Ohio. Campbell discusses the renovations of two historic industrial properties, the Northern Ohio Blanket Mills complex and the Astrup Company site. Both properties are important to the city’s past and, having fallen out of use for their original purposes, are now having their historic elements preserved as their interiors are transformed to suit new uses.

In the Trending article, senior advisor to the HUD secretary Richard Cho and HUD senior program specialist William Snow discuss the potential impact of four federal funding resources on homelessness. The authors explain how $60 million, allocated through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, the American Rescue Plan, and the CARES Act, and directed through four key programs, can help renters remain housed, increase shelter capacity in communities that need it, and rehouse those already experiencing homelessness.

The Bloom Colocates Affordable Housing and Emergency Shelter in Alexandria, Virginia
The Bloom is a 97-unit affordable housing development that shares its building in Alexandria, Virginia, with Carpenter’s Shelter, an emergency shelter located on the ground floor for people experiencing homelessness. The seven-story building was completed in 2020 by nonprofit developer Alexandria Housing Development Corporation, at a cost of $51.1 million. Although the shelter and the permanent housing are separate, with distinct entrances, 10 units of the Bloom are reserved as permanent supportive housing for former shelter clients.
