San Juan, Puerto Rico: Mixed-Income Housing Transforms the Commonwealth's Affordable Housing
HUD User publishes a series of case studies based on federal, state, and local strategies that increase affordable housing opportunities and support sustainable community development. The projects and community development efforts featured in these reports have demonstrated innovation through a multitude of partnerships and initiatives.
Located in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Bayshore Villas was completed in 2018 as the second of three mixed-income housing projects in Puerto Rico. Prior to these developments, there was no residential building that combined subsidized and market-rate units on the entire island. Consisting of 174-units within 12 modern buildings over 3 blocks, Bayshore Villas looks very different from the island’s first public housing project that previously stood on the site. The development is oriented outward to public spaces, which integrates it into the surrounding community. The buildings also incorporate resilient design features, which helped Bayshore Villas to withstand minimal damage during the 2017 hurricanes.
