Breaking Barriers for Renters


Enterprise Community Partners held its 40th Anniversary Conference in Washington, D.C., in October 2022, which brought together affordable housing advocates, practitioners, and government officials. During the opening plenary titled, “Upward Mobility through Wealth Creation: The Case for Rentership,” speakers discussed solutions to the housing affordability crisis, the importance of connecting affordable housing to education and job opportunities, and strategies to foster a shared ownership of neighborhoods among renters and homeowners. HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge discussed the need to outlaw source of income discrimination and encourage landlords to accept voucher-holders.

Regional Development Policy Committee Week at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) hosted its semiannual Regional Development Policy Committee (RDPC) Week in Paris from November 28 to December 2, 2022. Attended by representatives from several federal agencies, including HUD, delegates shared approaches to wide-ranging policy challenges, including tackling climate adaptation and resiliency, strengthening social cohesion and economic development, and promoting energy efficiency in housing.

Large-Scale Affordable Housing Addresses Community Needs and Helps Spur Neighborhood Growth in Queens, New York
New York City’s growth plan for the Far Rockaway neighborhood’s downtown area assigns affordable housing a substantial role in seeding the mixed-use, mixed-income, and resilient transformation of the area. Beach 21st Street is a large-scale project that embodies these ambitions. In addition to bringing those assets to the Far Rockaway community, project developer The Community Builders partnered with the nonprofit Xposure Foundation to create a daycare facility to serve the neighborhood, recognizing that affordable childcare is an important part of ensuring access to economic opportunity.
