In January, HUD released the Components of Inventory Change (CINCH) and Rental Dynamics reports on www.HUDUSER.gov. The CINCH report measures changes in the characteristics of the housing stock of the United States. Using data collected from the national American Housing Survey (AHS), conducted every two years, the characteristics of individual housing units are compared across time. This comparison allows researchers to see not only changes in the characteristics of housing units, but also in the characteristics of occupants. Information is available on the characteristics of units added and removed from the housing stock.

The CINCH and Rental Dynamics Reports cover the periods of 2017 to 2019 nationally. Metropolitan versions of the CINCH and Rental Dynamics reports cover the cities of Seattle, WA and Washington, DC between 2017 and 2019. The Metropolitan versions of the CINCH and Rental Dynamics reports also cover Philadelphia, PA and Raleigh, NC between 2015 and 2019. The longer period is based on the rotating nature of some metropolitan areas in the AHS.
