Welcome to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) Boundary Files Download Site. The boundary files available here are intended to supplement boundary files available from the U.S. Census Bureau. The files available from this site are for community planners interested in working with census tract and block group data that splits by jurisdiction boundaries (summary levels 080, 090, and 091). These shape files are most helpful when linked with census tract and block group data downloaded from the census standard tabulation data, CDBG low/mod area data (summary level 090), or the CHAS 2000 data (summary levels 080 and 091).

The files are in the ArcView Shapefile (.shp) format. Community planners may download the files at the state or county level. All of the files are zipped. When unzipped, there are 4 files that comprise the shapefile (.shx, .shp, .prj, and .dbf).The naming convention for the files is:
'FIPS state code' + 'FIPS county code' + '_' + 'geographic summary level'

For example, if you download summary level 080 for Autauga County, AL, you will get a file called 01001_080.zip. This file contains:

		01001_080.shx
		01001_080.shp
		01001_080.prj
		01001_080.dbf

Data may be obtained for the whole state or for individual counties. The user first selects the desired summary level at the bottom of this page. On the next page, the user selects a state of interest. After selecting the state of interest, a list is provided which includes the state and each county. Selecting the state from this list will get a shapefile for the whole state. Selecting a county will get a shapefile for that individual county.

Note: Geographic files are for data from the Census 2000, and will not match with 2006-2010 CHAS data.
