At the end of the third quarter of 2001, the estimate of the total housing stock, 121,195,000 units, was down a statistically insignificant 0.3 percent from the second quarter of 2001 but increased a statistically insignificant 1.2 percent above 2000’s third-quarter level. The number of occupied units increased a statistically insignificant 0.1 percent from 2001’s second quarter and rose 1.0 percent above the third quarter of 2000. Owner-occupied homes increased a statistically insignificant 0.7 percent from the second quarter of 2001 and were up 1.6 percent above the past year’s third quarter. Rentals decreased a statistically insignificant 1.3 percent from the previous quarter and declined a statistically insignificant 0.3 percent from the third quarter of 2000. Vacant units were down 3.4 percent from the past quarter but increased 2.6 percent from 2000’s third quarter.

The homeowner vacancy rate, at 1.9 percent, was up a statistically insignificant 0.1 percentage point from the second quarter of 2001 and was up 0.3 percentage point from the third quarter of 2000. The 2001 third-quarter national rental vacancy rate, at 8.4 percent, increased a statistically insignificant 0.1 percentage point from the previous quarter and was up a statistically insignificant 0.2 percentage point from the same quarter of 2000.

Homeownership Rates iconHomeownership Rates

The national homeownership rate, at an all-time high, was 68.1 percent in the third quarter of 2001. The rate was up 0.4 percentage point from the past quarter and was up 0.4 percentage point from the third quarter of 2000. The homeownership rate for minority households, an all-time high of 49.2 percent, increased 0.4 percentage point from the second quarter of 2001 and increased 1.0 percentage point from the third quarter of 2000. The 62.3-percent homeownership rate for young households, up 1.3 percentage point from the second quarter of 2001, was also an all-time high. The young households rate increased 1.3 percentage point from 2000’s third quarter as well.
