Mitigating Neighborhood Blight


In November 2017, the Federal Reserve System presented "Solutions for Mitigating Neighborhood Blight: Innovations and Policy Strategies," a webinar in which panelists discussed current research and successful programs to mitigate the impact of blight and promote neighborhood revitalization. The problems posed by blight, vacancy, and abandonment affect all types of communities around the country, and can incur local costs of hundreds of millions of dollars.

Announcing the Launch of the Excellence in Public-Philanthropic Partnerships Exchange
In the leadership message, director of PD&R's Office for International and Philanthropic Innovation Cynthia Campbell announces the launch of the Excellence in Public-Philanthropic Partnerships Exchange. A project of HUD and the Council on Foundations, the Exchange is a community of practice that will create a space for foundation and government representatives to exchange ideas, information, research, tools, and other resources. All previous winners of the HUD Secretary's Award for Public-Philanthropic Partnerships are invited to participate in the Exchange.

Strong Employment Growth Leads to Near-Record Housing Construction in Nashville HMA
The latest article in a series focusing on HUD's Comprehensive Housing Market Analyses examines the Nashville, Tennessee housing market area. An employment hub for the healthcare and education sectors that is also well known for music production and tourism, Nashville has been experiencing strong economic growth since 2010. Both the rental and sales housing markets were balanced as of August 2017. The 3-year economic outlook is for continued strong growth, at an annual rate of 3.4 percent.

Whittier Lyndhurst Washington Contributes to Eco-District in Boston's Codman Square
Developed by the Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation (CSNDC), Whittier Lyndhurst Washington is a scattered-site development project in the Boston, Massachusetts neighborhood of Codman Square that opened in 2017. The transit-oriented project provides 44 rental units that are affordable to low- and extremely low-income households. CSNDC has been recognized with Boston's Greenovate Award, and 28 of the Whittier Lyndhurst Washington units are located in the city's Talbot-Norfolk Triangle eco-innovation district.
