Houston, Texas: Delivering Homes in Near Northside

HUD User publishes a series of case studies based on federal, state, and local strategies that increase affordable housing opportunities and support community development. The projects and community development efforts featured in these reports have demonstrated innovation through a multitude of partnerships and initiatives.

Avenue Community Development Corporation (Avenue CDC) played a central role in converting a 20-acre industrial site in the Near Northside of Houston, Texas, into 287 housing units with a mix of affordability and tenure. The site contains affordable and market-rate units divided between 3 multifamily buildings and 95 newly built detached homes. This development serves two of the community's major goals — to turn hazardous industrial sites into uses more compatible with its residential character and to provide affordable housing options for its most vulnerable residents.

Visit HUD User's Case Studies page to learn more about affordable homeownership and to view other promising examples of how communities across the nation are raising the bar on community development.
