Addressing the Affordable Housing Gap


In November 2018, the National Housing Conference held its Solutions for Affordable Housing convening in Washington, DC. At a panel titled "Filling the Affordable Housing Gap," four panelists joined NHC policy director Tristan Bréaux to explore strategies to expand the supply of housing affordable to low- and moderate-income households. The speakers discussed measures to decrease development costs, ways to promote affordable homeownership, and more.

Forecasting PD&R's Research for the Next Year
In the leadership message, general deputy assistant secretary for PD&R Todd M. Richardson provides information about congressional funding allocations for the office's research priorities in fiscal years 2018 and 2019. Additionally, Richardson describes upcoming opportunities for contractors and cooperative agreement recipients, and provides instructions for accessing the relevant solicitations when they become available.

Employment Growth and High Housing Costs in Washington, DC
The latest article in a series focusing on HUD's Comprehensive Housing Market Analyses (CHMAs) examines the Washington, DC housing market area (HMA). The capital of the United States and a popular tourist destination, Washington, DC, has seen strong job growth and high net in-migration since 2010. The sales housing market is tight, with sales prices among the highest in the nation. Nearly half of all home sales are of condominiums. The rental market is balanced.

In Practice:
First Affordable Family Housing Development outside the City of Reading in Decades
Opened in February 2018, River Run Meadows Apartments is a 58-unit affordable housing project in Berks County, Pennsylvania. The first affordable development in rural Berks County in a decade, River Run Meadows Apartments consists of six buildings on a 20-acre plot in close proximity to the Schuylkill River Trail. Community amenities include onsite laundry facilities, a community center, and an athletic court.
