"The State of the Nation's Housing" Report Describes a Strong Homeownership Market but a Lack of Affordable Rental Options


This summer, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta hosted a panel discussion of the latest edition of the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies' "State of the Nation's Housing 2019" report. The speakers, who represented public, private, and philanthropic entities, discussed the report's major findings about the insufficient availability of affordable rental housing options and explored possible solutions. The event was moderated by Amy Scott, a senior correspondent for the nonprofit news organization Marketplace.

The 13th Federal Congress on National Urban Development Policy
In the leadership message, PD&R's International and Philanthropic Affairs Division director Cynthia Campbell describes her experiences at the 13th Federal Congress on National Urban Development Policy. Held in Stuttgart, Germany, in September 2019, the annual conference received representatives from several nations and presented an opportunity to discuss urban development issues. Campbell provides a general overview of the event and explains its link to the German Marshall Fund of the United States' Dialogues for Change initiative.

The St. James Plaza Affordable Apartments Provide a Lasting Legacy for a Faith Community in Alexandria, Virginia
Opened in 2018 on the former site of St. James United Methodist Church, St. James Plaza is a 93-unit affordable apartment building in the Beauregard neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia. The church, having decided to move to a smaller facility nearby and ensure that their old land would be used to secure affordable housing, sold the three-acre property to local nonprofit developer AHC Inc. in 2015. The $33.1 million project includes an early childhood education center managed by Campagna Center, an education and childcare nonprofit.

Research:
New Metrics for Measuring Employment Outcomes for HUD-Assisted Households
Published in July 2019, the HUD report "Assessment of Economic Opportunity Metrics for HUD-Assisted Renters" evaluates the relationship between HUD programs and employment outcomes for assisted households. The study develops and explores four indicators that researchers can use to evaluate existing administrative data to determine the economic opportunity of a given area's assisted households. The researchers used three major datasets published by HUD and the U.S. Census Bureau.
