PD&R Edge, an online magazine, provides you with a snapshot view of our newly released research, periodicals, publications, news, and commentaries on housing and urban development issues.

Since 2005, PD&R has collected and published quarterly HUD Aggregated United States Postal Service Address Data, which both measures neighborhood vacancy and reveals which neighborhoods are adding new housing, offering a near-real-time look for researchers and policymakers into neighborhood-level housing changes. To aid researchers and policymakers, PD&R launched the Neighborhood Change Web Map in 2023 and has further developed an Application Programming Interface (API) to improve user interaction with the HUD Aggregated United States Postal Service Address dataset.

Naturally occurring affordable housing is, by far, the most common form of affordable housing in the United States, with three times as many unsubsidized affordable units in existence as subsidized units. In Madison, Wisconsin, a former motel was converted into 129 affordable studio units without relying on public subsidies, having identified a market opportunity for “affordable luxury” to serve residents, including students, visiting nurses, and frequent business travelers. The project successfully removed nuisance behavior from the property while addressing a gap in Madison’s housing ecosystem.
