In Washington, D.C., nonprofit service organization Central Union Mission has been serving men experiencing homelessness in the area since 1884. Today, the organization operates a men’s shelter, workforce development programs, and a Restoration and Transformation program rooted in the organization’s Christian mission of service. Central Union Mission also offers family services, including two family resource centers and a summer sleepaway camp that gives many kids their first significant time spent outside of the city.

In Hendersonville, North Carolina, developer Woda Cooper overcame zoning challenges, severe weather during construction, and community concerns to complete Hawkins Pointe, a 43-unit development that supports low-income seniors’ ability to age in place as their mobility needs change over time. Hawkins Pointe’s location near downtown Hendersonville and local medical facilities helps the project meet residents' needs.

The Picket Fence: Evaluating Systems-Built Housing Approaches in Pittsburgh
PD&R research funding is supporting a University of Pittsburgh evaluation of the Picket Fence, a systems-built concept home constructed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Developed by the Housing Innovation Alliance in collaboration with Structural Modular Innovations, the home serves as a platform for studying design choices, construction processes, and how consumers and industry respond to systems-built housing. Researchers will analyze consumer and industry survey results, review construction processes, and assess the home's long-term durability and performance, helping to advance understanding of how systems-built construction supports the delivery of safe and cost-effective housing at scale.
