2018 Innovation in Affordable Housing Student Design and Planning Competition Site Visit — Dover Housing Authority at Whittier Falls, New Hampshire


On March 7, the four finalist teams competing in this year's Innovation in Affordable Housing Student Design and Planning Competition visited Dover, New Hampshire. The students toured two sites selected by the Dover Housing Authority, and will revise their previously submitted site plans based on the visits. This year, teams were instructed to design 154 affordable units for seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. On April 18, the teams will present their revised proposals at HUD Headquarters and the jury will decide the winner.

The Fair Housing Act at 50
In the leadership message, acting general deputy assistant secretary for PD&R Todd M. Richardson discusses the impact of the Fair Housing Act, signed into law by President Johnson on April 11, 1968. Richardson describes the development of the methodology used by PD&R to measure the extent of discrimination in housing, examines the progress the nation has made in regards to housing discrimination, and provides information about PD&R's extensive body of research on the topic, including a list of recent reports.

Highlighting HUD's Best Practices Manual for Using Compressed Earth Blocks, An Interview with Michael Blanford
In the trending article, PD&R research engineer Michael Blanford answers questions about HUD's publication, A Best Practices Manual for Using Compressed Earth Blocks in Sustainable Home Construction in Indian Country. The manual, published in May 2017, provides technical and practical guidance for the production and use of compressed earth blocks to address housing needs in Indian Country. Blanford discusses the development of the manual, how utilizing compressed earth block construction can function as economic development, and more.

New Affordable Housing Opens in Denver's Five Points Neighborhood — Welton Park
Welton Park, a 223-unit affordable family housing development in Denver's historic Five Points neighborhood, opened in fall 2016. Developer Century Development's successful completion of the $44.1 million project helped kick-start additional development in the area northeast of downtown, and contributed to the revitalization strategy for the neighborhood adopted by the city in 2011. During the development process, Century implemented a participatory design process to assuage community concerns about affordable housing.
