Cityscape Symposium on Extreme Heat in Cities

Submission Deadline: April 3, 2024

In 2025 Cityscape intends to publish several articles in a symposium on how to cool cities or mitigate the impacts of extreme heat, especially its impacts on low- and moderate-income workers and residents and socially vulnerable groups. Papers may be from any discipline but should be intelligible to a multidisciplinary audience. Articles must be original work not published elsewhere.

Topics to be considered for the Extreme Heat in Cities symposium include (but are not limited to) -

• Effectiveness — The effectiveness at cooling down urban areas or mitigating extreme heat's impacts of actual interventions or potential innovations, such as green infrastructure, enhancing urban waterways, co-generation technologies, building technology, methods for increasing albedo, cityscapes that minimize heat trapping, work schedules that protect outdoor workers, and so on
• Feasibility — The feasibility of such interventions or potential innovations in terms of social, economic, financial, political, or material (e.g., built environment, building technology, landscape design, land use) factors
• Case studies or innovative proposals of city planning intended to decrease the urban heat island effect, mitigate extreme heat's impacts, or create infrastructure resilient to extreme heat
• Understanding how the built environment contributes to heat islands in cities and why certain areas become hotspots
• Understanding how cities can monitor extreme heat and pinpoint places where heat is dangerous to workers and residents
• Community resilience — How urban communities can prepare for and adapt to extreme heat through social and organizational means

The symposium is intended to bring together several excellent, in-depth research papers that could be useful to cities and other actors seeking feasible and effective ways to cool down urban neighborhoods or mitigate the impacts of extreme heat, especially its impacts on low- and moderate-income workers and residents and socially vulnerable groups.

Submitted papers deemed appropriate for the symposium will be peer reviewed and may need to be revised and resubmitted before a final decision on publication is made. To be considered for the Cityscape symposium on Extreme Heat in Cities, papers must be submitted by April 3, 2024.
