Cityscape Symposium on Housing for Those Who Have Served in Our Military

Submission Timeline:
Proposal Deadline: December 2024
Full Manuscript Submission Deadline: May 1, 2025

In 2025, Cityscape intends to publish several articles in a symposium that explore research on housing for U.S. military Veterans and their families. We seek quality studies across a broad range of areas related but not limited to: housing instability, supported housing or other publicly subsidized housing, individual or policy-level housing interventions, and other housing-related topics that include Veterans. A central goal is to identify a collection of papers that examine housing for Veterans from multiple disciplines and topics. Papers may be from any discipline but broad enough for a multidisciplinary audience. We are especially interested in articles that are not dedicated to health outcomes. Articles must be original work not published elsewhere.

Topics to be considered for the issue include but are not limited to:

  • Public-funded housing programs for Veterans including the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Affairs (HUD-VASH) program, other Section 8 housing programs, etc.
  • VA home mortgage insurance program or other mortgage programs for Veterans
  • Rental subsidies for Veterans and families
  • Community housing programs for unstably housed Veterans and their families
  • Developing and sustaining affordable housing options for Veterans and their families
  • Existing or proposed policies and their impact on housing for Veterans
  • Role of federal agencies (VA, HUD, etc.) in housing veterans and issues like VA payments in calculating income for housing programs

To be considered for the Cityscape symposium on Housing for Those Who Have Served in Our Military, authors are invited to submit proposals for consideration. A proposal should include: a 250-word abstract and one-page initial paper outline. Proposals are due December 1, 2024. Submit proposals to both of the following email addresses: Jack Tsai, PhD ( and Sarah Hunter, PhD ( Authors will be notified by February 15, 2025 about an invitation for full manuscript submission.

Full manuscript submissions are due May 1, 2025. Submitted papers deemed appropriate for the symposium will be peer reviewed and may need to be revised and resubmitted before a final decision on publication is made.

We are also seeking reviewers. If you are interested in being a peer reviewer for this symposium, please let us know and provide a current CV so that we can match you with appropriate papers.

Cityscape is published three times a year by the Office of Policy Development and Research (PD&R) of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) with the goal of bringing high-quality original research on housing and community development issues to scholars, government officials, and practitioners.
