Report Acceptance Date: March 1943 (235 pages)

Posted Date: December 23, 2025

This historical publication was a guide for the construction of war housing projects other than temporary housing, which were constructed under the Lanham Act. The focus of the paper is on how best to balance the need to economize construction with the Act’s goal of privatizing the buildings post-war. To do so, designers were tasked with consulting with local officials to ensure buildings were in line with local conditions, plans, and the housing traditions of the people for whom the project is being built. Topics to be considered included: site selection, survey requirements, site planning, site engineering, lawns and planting, dwelling design, community facilities, structural design, plumbing, heating, and electrical.
