The report, "PATH Technology Roadmap: Whole House and
Building Process Redesign" (Year One Progress Report) is
another in a series of technology roadmaps developed to
help the housing industry make informed decisions when
approaching research and development (R&D) investments.
The Whole House and Building Process Redesign roadmap
focuses specifically on taking a whole house perspective
on home building and refining the building process.

The vision for this Roadmap is to build better homes
faster and at lower cost. The report looks at conditions
as they stand today, examines some key industry
challenges, and outlines activities and accomplishments
that will lead to the attainment of this vision.

Five strategies for realizing the vision set forth in
Whole House and Building Process Redesign were devised,
including:
o Manage the change process: accelerate acceptance of
innovative home building technologies.
o Change the home building paradigm: create an
environment that facilitates systems solutions.
o Industrialize the home building process.
o Improve the constructability of houses.
o Move more of the home building process into the factory.

Benefits of each strategy and roadmaps for implementation
are discussed in detail in the full report.

By 2010, home design and construction should be
efficient, predictable, and controllable with a median
cycle time of 20 working days from groundbreaking to
occupancy with resulting cost savings that make
homeownership available to 90 percent of the population.
These ambitious goals will be achieved through improving
the "whole house" design process, as well as the manner
in which a house is constructed. To help the industry
'get from here to there,' PATH's latest Roadmap describes
new and innovative products, systems, processes, and
underscores the importance of ongoing education.

By addressing these issues through thoughtful, cohesive
R&D strategies, the home building industry will continue
to play a key role in providing affordable, durable
housing for America's families.
