Upcoming: Hispanic Serving Institutions Research Center of Excellence

In its FY 2022 budget, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) received $5,500,000, to establish innovative Research Centers of Excellence (COEs) at Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs). These HSI COEs will conduct research projects on multiple topics of strategic interest to HUD, with a focus on housing, community, and economic development in underserved communities.

HUD will fund the HSI Research Centers of Excellence through an upcoming Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO). HUD anticipates that this upcoming NOFO will be similar to the NOFO HUD recently published titled HBCU Research Center of Excellence (https://www.hud.gov/program_offices/spm/gmomgmt/grantsinfo/fundingopps/fy22_hbcu).

Only HSIs will be able to compete for or receive awards made under this upcoming NOFO. The Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended (https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/20/1101a), defines a Hispanic-serving institution. For more details on HSI eligibility, visit https://sites.ed.gov/hispanic-initiative/hispanic-serving-institutions-hsis/.

The HSI Research Centers of Excellence will conduct research projects intended to initiate an ongoing series of reports focused on housing, community, and economic development in underserved communities from the unique perspective of institutions that can serve as national, local, or regional benchmarks and assist in the support of COE(s) that expand the housing and community development research efforts at Hispanic Serving Institutions of Higher Education.

What is the timeframe for HUD’s NOFO?

The Notice of Funding Opportunity is currently under development. We anticipate its release in late Fall 2022.
