The Role of Community Schools in Place-Based Initiatives: Collaborating for Student Success

A new paper released today by the Coalition for Community Schools, PolicyLink, and the West Coast Collaborative, titled “The Role of Community Schools in Place-Based Initiatives: Collaborating for Student Success,” discusses how community schools can effectively align with broader place-based initiatives such as the Promise Neighborhoods program. Community schools operate in over 100 localities nationwide, and they help build community support for place-based initiatives by quickly acting on new opportunities, participating in multi-sector partnerships, and offering a convenient location for students and families to receive resources. This paper focuses on community schools in three municipalities — Los Angeles, California; Multnomah County, Oregon; and South King County, Washington — and details how the schools function as accessible, local service providers for larger initiatives.
