New on The Edge

In Practice:
Complex in Poughkeepsie Provides Housing and Services to Seniors and Veterans

Poughkeepsie, New York is home to a new development that is providing affordable housing and supportive services for seniors and homeless or disabled veterans. The 72-unit Poughkeepsie Commons includes onsite medical services and offsite referrals and was completed through a combination of federal, state, county, and local funding support.

Policy Update:
County Land Banks Tackle Vacancy and Blight

While their geographic scope and authority varies across the country, land banks are proving to be a highly adaptable tool for responding to local real estate conditions and guiding strategic investments.

Equity Mapping and the Geography of Opportunity
Geographic information systems (GIS) are being used at the local, regional, and state levels to help decisionmakers transform data into compelling portrayals of their communities. Equity mapping uses GIS to illustrate the physical disconnect that often exists between areas with low poverty rates and good schools and neighborhoods with high concentrations of low-income and minority residents.
