New on The Edge
Message from PD&R Leadership:
Bringing Experts Together
This year, PD&R began sponsoring “expert convenings” – a timely and flexible means of bringing leading thinkers to HUD for knowledge sharing. Assistant Secretary for Policy Development and Research Katherine O’Regan discusses how these sessions are helping to broaden the conversations around key areas of policy and research at HUD.
In Practice:
Elders and Foster Families Find Common Ground at Bridge Meadows
An infill development in Portland, Oregon is providing affordable housing and a support network for low-income elders and families in the process of adopting foster children. Bridge Meadows features 36 affordable units, with 9 reserved for adoptive families, and the remaining units set aside for elders who commit to volunteer with children living in the development.
Policy Update:
Temporary Urbanism: Alternative Approaches to Vacant Land
In communities across the country, temporary interventions in the urban environment are becoming increasingly common as a way to put underutilized land back to productive use. Researchers and practitioners are beginning to examine these interventions to better understand their short- and long-term effects.
