1. 2002 Metro Survey news.
The processing of the data from the 2002 metro survey is continuing. As most of you know, any forecasts of release dates aren't worth the pixels they're printed on at this stage. Our current hope is that we will have a quality control version of the public use file by the end of this month. This will then be used by HUD and our contractor (ICF Consulting) to look for anomalies and potential errors. I wouldn't expect to see a public release until late spring, but we live in hope.

2. Corrected alterations & repairs tables
The Census Bureau has posted the revised alterations & repairs tables for 2001 on its web site. The revised 1999 tables will be available shortly.

3. Revising the report for 2005 national survey
Census and HUD are starting to discuss revising the printed AHS report, with an eye towards implementing the changes with the 2005 survey. The current printed report is much longer than most Census Bureau publications in this Internet age. Our general plan is to print a much more abbreviated report, with most of the current tables being available only on the web. Any comments or suggestions you might have about what to keep and what to lose should be directed to me. If you have a suggestion that you would like discussed by the entire mailing list, by all means send it to the list.

4. Everything on CD-ROM
The Census Bureau has completed the process of putting all existing AHS reports and datasets on CD-ROM, from the 1973 survey to the present. Not all of these are yet available from HUD USER (about 20 CDs are on my desk, waiting for duplication), but you will soon be able to get everything about the AHS on CD or via download.

5. Paper publication close-out
Given item #4, above, the Census Bureau is planning to liquidate most of its paper copies of AHS reports. One estimate is that there are some 88,000 volumes in the basement at Suitland. If you know of a library in need of AHS publications, please contact the Census Bureau at ahsn@census.gov or (301) 763-3235. Paper copies will still be available for purchase from HUD USER.
