The University of Central Florida Pursues a High Return on Engagement

HUD User publishes a series of case studies based on federal, state, and local strategies that increase affordable housing opportunities and support sustainable community development. The projects and community development efforts featured in these reports have demonstrated innovation through a multitude of partnerships and initiatives.

At the University of Central Florida's Center for Public and Nonprofit Management, professors and students undertake training, research, and service projects that assist government and nonprofit organizations in engaging communities. For example, the center sponsored an AmeriCorps VISTA project that helped to build service agencies' capacity to address youth homelessness in Central Florida. The center also implemented a local Walking School Bus project in partnership with several Central Florida elementary schools to help students safely walk to school. The center's effectiveness in engaging Central Florida communities has encouraged the organization to expand its service area to governments and nonprofits nationally and internationally.

Visit HUD User's Case Studies page to learn more about the University of Central Florida's community engagement efforts and to view other promising examples of how anchor institutions across the nation are helping to foster sustainable community development.
