Managing Community Change:
A Dialogue on Gentrification

Many American metropolitan areas are experiencing gentrification, a form of neighborhood change that occurs when higher-income groups move into low-income neighborhoods, increasing the demand for housing and driving up prices. At PD&R's most recent Quarterly Update, HUD Secretary Julián Castro, Assistant Secretary for PD&R Katherine O'Regan, and other speakers focused on how gentrifying neighborhoods can manage change in ways that keep communities inclusive, affordable, and diverse.

Safe and Supported Community Plan Assists Homeless LGBTQ Youth in Hamilton County, Ohio
After the Federal Framework to End Youth Homelessness specifically identified lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth as a subpopulation of youth vulnerable to homelessness, HUD and its partner agencies created the first federal LGBTQ Homelessness Prevention Initiative. Hamilton County, Ohio, one of the initiative's two pilot communities, has developed the Safe and Supported Community Plan to prevent homelessness and promote positive outcomes for LGBTQ youth.

Each year, more than 600,000 individuals are released from federal and state prisons. Estimates from the National Alliance to End Homeless indicate that one in five of these individuals become homeless upon reentering the community. In an in-depth interview, Kymian Ray, Neighborhood and Community Investment Specialist, Public Housing Community and Supportive Services at HUD, discusses how HUD and other federal agencies are addressing the housing challenges of formerly incarcerated individuals.

Policy Update:
Leveraging the Health-Housing Nexus
A robust body of research has established links between health and housing. Findings indicate that various aspects of housing, ranging from the physical quality of a home to the conditions of the surrounding neighborhood, affect residents' health. Recent changes in health policy under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act have created new opportunities to combine housing and health funds and test new coordinated models of care.
