The 2020 Innovation in Affordable Housing Student Design and Planning Competition


The 2020 Innovation in Affordable Housing Student Design and Planning Competition challenged four finalist teams of students to design affordable housing suitable for a 6.6 acre parcel in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The teams traveled to the city in March, and the awards ceremony was held as a virtual event in April. Yale University took first place and the University of Maryland, College Park was the runner-up, taking home the $20,000 and $10,000 prizes, respectively. The two remaining finalist teams, the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and the University of California, Berkeley were awarded $5,000 each.

Mosaic Gardens at Westlake Provides Supportive and Intergenerational Housing in Los Angeles
Opened in 2018 near downtown Los Angeles, Mosaic Gardens at Westlake is a 125-unit affordable apartment development serving seniors, intergenerational families, and people formerly experiencing homelessness. The one-acre development is located near transit, jobs, and a major hospital, and has two multi-story towers, one for families and one for seniors. The $57.6 million project was developed by the nonprofit Linc Housing, and supportive services for residents are provided by Linc, the People Concern, and other partners.

Modest Employment Growth and Soft Home Sales Conditions in the Virginia Beach HMA
The most recent article in a series focusing on HUD's Comprehensive Housing Market Analyses (CHMAs) examines the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, Virginia-North Carolina Housing Market Area (Virginia Beach HMA). The HMA spans seven counties and has a population of approximately 1.74 million. As of 2019, employment is growing modestly, the home sales market is soft, and the rental housing market is balanced.
