Seizing New Opportunities and Partnerships: The Role of Philanthropy in Innovating HUD's Resilience Work
HUD Secretary Julián Castro recently announced the winners of the National Disaster Resilience Competition (NDRC), which makes nearly $1 billion available to communities that have been affected by natural disasters. NDRC and Rebuild by Design, another resilience-focused competition launched in 2013, represent a new kind of public-philanthropic partnership that animates the resources of the federal government with the flexibility, creativity, and innovation made possible by philanthropic funding and support.

Housing Highlights in the President's Budget: Using and Investing in Research
Earlier this month, President Obama submitted his administration's final budget proposal to Congress. Assistant Secretary for Policy Development and Research Katherine O'Regan highlights the budget priorities for HUD, such as ending family homelessness and addressing poverty and inequality through housing. The Assistant Secretary also discusses how the current budget proposal has been informed by prior investments in research.

Affordable Housing Contributes to Equitable Transit-Oriented Development in Saint Paul's Corridor of Opportunity
The first phase of Western U Plaza was completed in December 2015, providing 60 affordable housing units and 3,000 square feet of community space adjacent to the METRO Green Line's Western Avenue station in St. Paul, Minnesota. Collaboration among many public, private, and philanthropic partners made Western U Plaza possible. The project promotes equitable transit-oriented development in one of the city's most diverse but lowest-income neighborhoods.

The Evolution of HUD's Public-Private Partnerships, An Interview with Chase Sackett
Most of HUD's programs, including those focused on rental assistance and housing finance, are structured as public-private partnerships or have significant public-private aspects. Policy Update:
Moving Toward a Sustainable Future: Three Models of Regional Planning
HUD's Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant program encouraged coordination among local jurisdictions and planning agencies to address regional challenges. Supported by the program, grant recipients in Northeast Ohio, Western North Carolina, and Washington's Puget Sound brought together local stakeholders to systematically study the conditions of each region, and to develop a long-term vision and policy framework that integrates the needs of all residents and communities.
