On September 9, 2025, as part of the Innovative Housing Showcase in Washington, D.C., HUD hosted a panel titled “Financing the Future of Affordable Housing” that identified opportunities for HUD and its partners to cut red tape and improve efficiency in both mortgage finance and housing production. Panelists discussed the potential for technical innovations, such as automation and artificial intelligence, to lower financing costs and improve access; how Opportunity Zones have helped spur housing development; and how zoning and regulatory changes facilitate greater housing production and improve housing affordability.

In the Leadership Message, John Gibbs, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy Development and Research, discusses the role that sensible policy at all levels of government plays in facilitating the flourishing of housing innovation at scale, highlighting how exhibitors at the 2025 Innovative Housing Showcase demonstrated the potential of manufactured housing, factory-built components, modular housing, and improved home maintenance technologies to create a better, faster, and more cost-effective housing sector for the American people.

This year's Innovative Housing Showcase featured 30 exhibits, drawing policymakers, industry leaders, students, and families eager to explore the latest in affordable, resilient housing technologies. Since launching in 2018, the showcase has been a platform for HUD to present cutting-edge ideas in housing design, construction, and materials. The showcase highlighted solutions capable of reducing costs, increasing resilience, and expanding supply, such as panelized construction, 3D printing, manufactured homes, and modular multifamily developments.

Vacant Motel Becomes Housing and Healthcare Hub in Jackson, Mississippi
In Jackson, Mississippi, a partnership led by the Pearl Street African Methodist Episcopal Church is helping to address health burdens among low-income residents through the creation of the Pearl Apartments, which adapted a former motel building into 75 units of affordable housing alongside a health clinic. The Pearl is one of two pilot projects under a local “Health + Housing” initiative that is working to address health and wellness issues in affordable housing developments.
