Owasso,
Oklahoma: Providing a Safe
and
Stable Community for People
with
Intellectual and
Developmental
Disabilities
A New Leaf, a
nonprofit in Tulsa, responded to the
housing difficulties faced by people
with intellectual and developmental
disabilities (I/DDs) by opening The
Village at A New Leaf, a 62-unit
affordable housing community in
Owasso, Oklahoma, in 2022. The
Village offers a variety of housing
options, including single-family
homes, apartment buildings, and a
dormitory for Transition Academy
students.
Residents,
earning less
than 60 percent of the area median
income, receive support in achieving
greater independence through
workforce training and life skills
programs. Funded mainly through
private donations and low-income
housing tax credits, The Village has
already enabled many residents to
live independently, setting a
promising precedent for addressing
housing challenges for individuals
with I/DDs nationwide.
