After organizing a task force to analyze the stock of vacant and abandoned houses in South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg initiated a program that aimed to rehabilitate or demolish 1,000 of those properties in 1,000 days. Under the program, the city's code enforcement department assessed each home to determine if it was repairable or should be demolished. The program ultimately addressed 1,222 houses and encouraged owners of vacant or abandoned properties to take action.
