Post-Katrina Disaster Housing Assistance and Household Transition
In the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, HUD created the Disaster Housing Assistance Program to help families transition back to stable, market-rate housing. A recent report, “Study of Household Transitions from the Disaster Housing Assistance Program,” examines the results of the program and presents considerations for future disaster assistance.

Historic Fire House in Duluth Renovated through Local Collaboration
The Firehouse Flats complex in Duluth, Minnesota is the most recent addition to the ongoing revitalization efforts in the city’s Hillside neighborhood. The historic rehabilitation provides 12 apartments for extremely low- and very low-income households, including the chronically homeless.

Shared Equity Models Offer Sustainable Homeownership
In the wake of the housing market collapse, pathways to homeownership have been obstructed by tighter lending standards and declining household incomes. For low-income families seeking homeownership opportunities in this new economic climate, shared equity models offer many of the benefits of owning a home with less financial risk.
