Message from PD&R Leadership:
Insurance to Mitigate the Impacts of Disasters or Fund Disaster Recovery
In the leadership message, PD&R senior advisor for disaster response Dana Bres discusses the role of disaster insurance in funding recoveries after natural disasters. Using 2017's Hurricane Harvey as an example, Bres compares various sources of postdisaster funding, finding that payouts from the insurance industry accounted for 61 percent of the total identified assistance. Insurance payouts provide a sizeable, reliable, and speedy source of recovery funds, with insured properties more likely to rebuild than uninsured.

Low Sales Vacancy and Unemployment Rates in the Raleigh HMA
The latest article in a series focusing on HUD's Comprehensive Housing Market Analyses examines the Raleigh, North Carolina Housing Market Area (Raleigh HMA). Located in central North Carolina, the Raleigh HMA includes three counties and has an estimated population of 1.38 million. From February 2018 through February 2019, employment increased by 2.9 percent, and jobs growth is expected to continue for the next three years. During this time, the home sales market was slightly tight, and the rental market was balanced.

Veterans Village at Perry Point: A Home for Veterans Near the Support They Need
Opened in 2018, Veterans Village at Perry Point is a supportive housing complex for veterans and their families on the grounds of a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Maryland. The 75 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments were constructed in 42 rehabilitated buildings originally used as workforce housing for a WWI-era Army munitions plant. Nonprofit HELP USA performed the extensive renovations, and the units are subsidized via the HUD-VA Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) voucher program.
