Cleveland, Ohio: Preservation Anchors Sustainable Community Development

HUD USER publishes a series of Case Study examples based on federal, state, and local strategies that increase affordable housing opportunities, integrate sustainable features and practices, and increase access to public transportation. The projects featured in these reports have demonstrated innovation through a multitude of partnerships and initiatives.

The most recently highlighted Case Study is St. Luke’s Manor in Cleveland, Ohio. The former hospital and neighborhood landmark was rehabilitated to provide affordable housing for seniors and will soon be home to an award-winning charter school and multigenerational wellness and education center. The preservation and adaptive reuse of the 390,000-square-foot building was the recipient of the 2012 National Trust/HUD Secretary’s Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation.

Visit HUD USER's Case Studies Resource page to learn more about St. Luke’s Manor and to view other promising examples of how communities across the nation are raising the bar on affordable, sustainable development.
