Chicago, Illinois: Historic Green Rehabilitation at Harvest Commons

HUD USER publishes a series of Case Study case studies that highlight federal, state, and local strategies for increasing affordable housing opportunities, integrating sustainable features and practices, and improving access to public transportation. The projects featured in these case studies have demonstrated innovation through a multitude of partnerships and initiatives.

A recent Case Study details the transformation of the historic Union Park Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. The Art Deco structure was restored and reimagined as Harvest Commons — an 89-unit supportive housing project for vulnerable low-income residents. Opened in spring 2013, the project features a supportive service program that includes case management and counseling services, combined with a teaching kitchen, a social enterprise café, and an urban agriculture program.

Visit HUD USER’s Case Studies Resource page to learn more about Harvest Commons and to view other promising examples of how communities across the nation are raising the bar on sustainable community development.
