 Effects of Housing and Neighborhood on Children

Since 2009, "housing as a platform" — emphasizing the connection between housing stability and quality and important health, educational, and economic outcomes — has been a key strategic direction for HUD. In addition to the important efforts of HUD's programs and partnerships with other federal agencies and in participation with the How Housing Matters initiative, we have considered how housing quality and stability impacts a variety of populations. Evidence exists that a wide range of child outcomes are closely aligned with housing and neighborhood quality; among these outcomes are physical health, behavioral and emotional welfare, school achievement, and economic opportunity.

Event details:

  • Hear the latest on the housing markets;
  • Learn about how housing and neighborhood effects affect children; and
  • Hear about organizations that are working to promote housing quality and educational attainment.

Moderator: Julián Castro, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

Followed by a Panel Discussion with:

  • Sandra Newman, Professor of Policy Studies at Johns Hopkins University
  • Lauren Smith, Senior Strategic Advisor at the National Institute for Children's Health Quality
  • Jean Claude Brizard, President of the UpSpring Education Group
