San Francisco: Transforming an Historic YMCA into Supportive Housing and Health Clinic for the Homeless

HUD User publishes case studies from communities and regions across the country. The most recent example details the transformative renovation of the former Central YMCA in San Francisco's Tenderloin District into permanent housing and holistic supportive services for the city's homeless.

The Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation purchased the vacant YMCA building in 2007 and undertook a 5-year renovation that resulted in Kelly Cullen Community, featuring 172 permanent supportive housing units for the homeless and 2 apartments for staff. Kelly Cullen Community retains the building's longstanding social purpose and community role. In addition to commercial space on the ground floor, the developer restored many original building features, added a new community space, and a health clinic that provides medical, psychological, and social services for Kelly Cullen tenants, as well as patients from the wider community. The outcome of this complex renovation is housing for the formerly homeless in an elegant and dignified context.
