Community Engagement: Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis

HUD USER publishes examples of anchor institution case studies in communities and regions across the country. The most recent example details Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis's (IUPUI) efforts to support ongoing community revitalization efforts in the Near Westside neighborhoods of Indianapolis.

For almost 20 years, IUPUI has sustained partnerships with Indianapolis's Near Westside neighborhoods aimed at strengthening primary and secondary education, improving community health and public safety, and supporting economic development. This work, buttressed by civic engagement and service learning, has created a broad platform for IUPUI to deploy its student body, faculty, and other resources to improve the quality of life in Indianapolis' neighborhoods. Grants from HUD's Office of University Partnerships supported IUPUI's role in reopening a neighborhood high school and also catalyzed a series of neighborhood planning and programming efforts related to health and wellness that remain in place today.

Visit HUD USER's Case Studies page to learn more about IUPUI's work in the Near Westside of Indianapolis and to view other promising examples of how anchor institutions across the nation are supporting neighborhood revitalization.
