Earthquake Performance of Six-Story Building With Cold-Formed Steel Framing

Under HUD’s Research Partnerships program, the University of California San Diego led a project to learn how buildings with cold-formed, often called light-gauge, steel framing perform during earthquakes. The study, which tested a six-story, light-gauge, steel-framed building on the world’s largest outdoor seismic shake table, will allow researchers to better understand the seismic performance of this type of construction and help engineers to better incorporate affordability and safety into their designs.

Message from PD&R Leadership:
Remembering Leadership: Jack Sawyers and Paul Iron Cloud
Community leaders play important roles in advocating for their communities and helping to make decisions that shape them. The best of these leaders inspire the next generation to make personal sacrifices to lead and take responsibility. Todd M. Richardson, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy Development, highlights two such community leaders who passed away this year, Jack Sawyers and Paul Iron Cloud, and describes how they were strong and powerful voices for Native American housing at the local and national levels.

Research:
Childhood Housing and Adult Earnings: A Between-Siblings Analysis of Housing Vouchers and Public Housing
HUD recently released a report, Childhood Housing and Adult Earnings: A Between-Siblings Analysis of Housing Vouchers and Public Housing, that provides insight into the long-term effects of participation in voucher-assisted and public housing programs on future earnings and incarceration rates. The study, part of HUD’s Research Partnerships program, shows that children whose families receive HUD rental assistance when they are teenagers grow up to have higher earnings and lower incarceration rates in their early twenties.

Housing for Homeless and Special Needs Individuals Aids in Neighborhood Revitalization in Columbus, Ohio
In September 2014, the Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority opened Franklin Station to replace Sunshine Terrace, a deteriorating public housing highrise. Franklin Station, which offers 100 affordable housing units and a medical clinic, aids in the city of Columbus’ efforts to revitalize the Franklinton neighborhood. The development also helps to rebuild the lives of its tenants, individuals with special needs or who have experienced homelessness, through the provision of supportive services and integrated physical and behavioral health care.
