Apartment Demand for the Next 15 Years: Can We Meet the Need?


In July 2017, the Urban Institute hosted a panel discussion titled Apartment Demand for the Next 15 Years: Can We Meet the Need? Panelists included Priya Jayachandran of Volunteers of America, Paige Mueller of Whitegate Real Estate Advisors LLC, and Jamie Woodwell of the Mortgage Bankers Association. They discussed factors influencing current apartment demand, trends in the production of apartment housing, and future opportunities and challenges for apartment production.

Baltimore Historic II Project Receives ACHP/HUD Secretary's Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation
In July, HUD and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) honored the East Baltimore Historic II project with the 2017 ACHP/HUD Secretary's Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation. Rachelle Levitt, director of PD&R's Research Utilization Division, discusses the revitalization effort's work to advance affordable housing, economic empowerment, job creation, and civic engagement in the neighborhood of Oliver.

In Practice:
CAMBA Gardens Provides Supportive, Affordable Housing on Hospital Grounds in Brooklyn, New York
The In Practice article describes the award-winning CAMBA Gardens development, which provides onsite supportive services and 502 units of affordable housing on the campus of Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn, New York. The two-phase development is the result of a successful partnership between the Kings County Hospital Center, the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, nonprofit developer CAMBA Housing Ventures, and service provider CAMBA. CAMBA Gardens serves several population groups, including the formerly homeless, disabled individuals, hospital and municipal employees, and low-income households.

Strong Economic Growth and a Tight Housing Market Strain Housing Affordability in the Oakland Housing Market Area
The fourth article in a series focusing on HUD's Comprehensive Housing Market Analyses examines the Oakland, California housing market area (HMA). Located on the San Francisco Bay, the Oakland HMA has been experiencing strong economic growth since 2012, with the highest percentage of growth occurring in the education and health services sector. As of 2016, the markets for both sales and rentals were tight, with high demand leading to a dearth of affordable housing. The growth of the economy and area housing demand are expected to continue.
