Census and HUD have added a new report to the American Housing Survey (AHS) website and added new 2015 microdata to the Rental Housing Finance Survey website.

Important User Note on Structure Type Estimates

In User Notes, we posted some new technical documentation about 2017 structure type. It examines sharp increases found in structure type estimates between 2015 and 2017 and summarizes edits made to help close the gap in these estimates. The document summarizes potential causes for the increase and steps taken to mitigate the changes for 2017 national data. It also describes a plan to address structure type in future surveys. As we solidify our plans for future surveys, it is our intention to add information to this report.

New 2015 Rental Housing Finance Survey Public Use File

Public use microdata on the 2015 Rental Housing Finance Survey (RHFS) are now available! Every three years, this survey of rental housing owners and property managers provides the only source of information on rental housing finance characteristics. You will find data on topics such as rental property financing, ownership patterns, loan origination, mortgages, units and buildings on properties, and housing for low-income families and individuals.

Please note that the initial release of RHFS microdata does not include many variables describing details of the mortgage. As is the case with the AHS, these RHFS variables present disclosure challenges. We are continuing our efforts to overcome these challenges for both the AHS and the RHFS. We will update users if and when we release additional mortgage variables.

Questions? Suggestions? The AHS team is committed to making it as easy as possible to access and use AHS data. We want to hear from you. Call us at 1-800-245-2691 or email us at
