Achieving Lead Safe Housing in Cleveland
HUD User publishes a series of case studies based on federal, state, and local strategies that increase affordable housing opportunities and support sustainable community development. The projects and community development efforts featured in these reports have demonstrated innovation through a multitude of partnerships and initiatives.
Launched in 2019, the Lead Safe Cleveland Coalition (LSCC) is a community organization dedicated to addressing Cleveland, Ohio’s, persistent problem of lead poisoning. Most of Cleveland’s older housing stock predates the national ban on lead paint in residences, making the toxic substance a chronic problem for the city. The centerpiece of LSCC’s work is the Lead Safe Certification program, which requires owners of rental units to undergo a process to certify their properties as lead safe every 2 years. LSCC’s Lead Safe Home Fund, supported largely by a contribution from the Cleveland Clinic, makes various resources available for landlords and homeowners.
