The current regulatory environment for homebuilding in the United States contributes to the nationwide affordability crisis. At the 2025 Innovative Housing Showcase in Washington, D.C., government officials and industry leaders discussed how regulatory reform can foster innovation in housing development and promote affordability. Speakers highlighted the need for a flexible, responsive regulatory environment, considering new developments in housing construction techniques. Panelists explored strategies to modernize building codes, streamline permitting, and strengthen public-private collaboration in advancing affordable, resilient housing solutions.

At the end of the Civil War, a system of old soldiers’ homes was created, marking a systematic, nationwide effort to ensure both housing and health care for veterans. The original National Homes provided not just housing, but also medical care, recreation, and employment opportunities for veterans. Usually featuring architecture and landscape design intended to inspire pride among residents, these facilities set a high standard. Although the National Home system ended in the mid-20th century, federal efforts to house the nation’s veterans continue today through housing vouchers, low-income housing tax credit properties with veteran set-asides, and ongoing support for veterans experiencing homelessness.

Surmounting Housing Affordability Challenges in Big Sky, Montana
In Big Sky, Montana, public and private entities worked together to create RiverView Place to help address two of Big Sky’s most pressing housing needs: affordable year-round housing for the community’s resident workforce and workforce housing for seasonal workers at one of the area’s largest employers. The project is notable for the strength of the public-private collaboration in addressing these distinct housing needs in a mutually beneficial way, setting the stage for future work to make further progress in addressing Big Sky’s housing challenges.

Intermountain Health Invests in Community Health Through Housing
Intermountain Health, a nonprofit health system based in Salt Lake City, has established several programs to support residents’ health through access to housing and financial wellness. These efforts include past and present investments to support the development of affordable housing across Utah and other states in the system’s operating region, including helping to form the Utah Housing Preservation Fund, a nonprofit organization that acquires and preserves affordable housing at risk of conversion to market-rate housing and pursuing a “place-based” investment strategy to support housing stability, employment, and financial wellness.
