OT: Stata 8 Imports SAS XPORT files

This message doesn't concern the AHS directly, but it may be of interest to those of you that use the Stata statistical program to analyze AHS data.

According to "The Stata News" Volume 18, Number 3, Stata 8 can now read and write SAS XPORT format files. This is the format that is used to distribute AHS microdata files. The article says that Stata is adding this capability because the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires SAS XPORT format for submissions. Thus (and confusingly), the new commands are called fdause and fdasave. However, it appears that these commands can be used with any SAS XPORT files.

You need to update your Stata software via their web site (www.stata.com) in order to gain this capability.

I have only rudimentary knowledge of Stata myself. If any AHS user tries out this new capability, I'm sure we'd appreciate a report on how well it works.
