Median Home Price in the Metropolitan Statistical Area: $142,000

Description: The Millhouses were built in the 1840’s by a mill owner in order to provide housing for his workers. This project consisted of rehabilitating 17 deteriorating units and construction of 12 new units.

First-time homebuyers were selected according to income and were given pre- and post-mortgage counseling. Additionally, basic home maintenance training was provided by the Home Repair Institute. Funding was provided by a variety of sources including HUD, the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency, and the City of Gloucester.

The Historic Millhouses have brought civic pride to a distressed community through the rehabilitation and replication of these historically significant buildings. The project was also recently selected to receive the Governor’s Excellence in Housing Award.
